A soft carrier keeps your hands free and your baby close. The differences between good ones are mostly about how long they last, which positions they allow and whether they fit your body. The Ergobaby Omni Deluxe lasts longest and has the most storage, the BabyBjörn Harmony covers the widest height range, the Omni Classic gives you the Omni range with fewer extras, and the BabyBjörn Mini is the simple newborn option.

The picks

01

★Longest use

ErgobabyOmni Deluxe

Best for: One carrier from newborn to toddler with storage

A 4-position carrier for 7 to 45 lb (0 to 48 months), with four storage areas plus a detachable pouch, a privacy hood and mesh, cotton or linen fabric.

What we like

  • Highest weight limit here (45 lb)
  • Four storage areas plus pouch
  • Widest wearer size range listed

Watch out for

  • Forward-facing capped at 30 lb
  • Back carry only once baby sits unassisted

Ergobaby rates the Omni Deluxe from 7 to 45 lb, or birth to 48 months, with four positions. Front-in works from 7 lb and 20 in. Front-out runs from 14 lb and 25 in up to 30 lb. Hip and back carries start once the baby can sit unassisted. It fits petite to 4XL wearers, comes in mesh, cotton or linen, and has four storage areas plus a detachable pouch.

02

★Widest height range

BabyBjörnBaby Carrier Harmony

Best for: Soft, light-feeling carrier with back carry

A 4-position carrier for 7 to 40 lb and 21 to 39 in (0 to 3 years), in 3D mesh or woven fabric.

What we like

  • Recognized as hip-healthy by the IHDI
  • Fits XS to XXL wearers
  • Meets ASTM F2236

Watch out for

  • 5 lb lower weight limit than the Omni
  • BabyBjörn advises back carry only from age 1

The Harmony is rated 7 to 40 lb and 21 to 39 in, from birth to about 3 years. It has four positions: newborn, facing in, facing out from about 5 months, and back carry after age 1. BabyBjörn says the IHDI recognizes it as hip-healthy and that it meets ASTM F2236. It fits XS to XXL wearers.

03

★Simpler Omni

ErgobabyOmni Classic

Best for: The Omni carry range for less

The simpler Omni: the same 7 to 45 lb, 4-position range as the Deluxe, with a ventilated waist belt and a hood.

What we like

  • Same weight range and four positions as the Deluxe
  • Ventilated waist belt and hood

Watch out for

  • Fewer storage areas than the Deluxe
  • Forward-facing capped at 30 lb

The Omni Classic has the same 7 to 45 lb range and four positions as the Deluxe, with a ventilated waist belt and a hood. Pick it if you want the Omni range and don’t need the extra pockets.

04

★Newborn only

BabyBjörnBaby Carrier Mini

Best for: Newborns and the first year only

A compact newborn carrier for 7 to 24 lb and 21 to 30 in (0 to 12 months), with facing-in and facing-out positions.

What we like

  • Simplest BabyBjörn carrier for the newborn months
  • Front-in and front-out positions

Watch out for

  • Outgrown at 24 lb or 12 months
  • No back carry

The Mini is a smaller carrier for 7 to 24 lb and 21 to 30 in, or about the first year. It has newborn, facing-in and facing-out positions. There is no back carry. It makes sense as a first carrier, or for a parent who only plans to carry in the early months.

How to choose

  • One carrier for years: an Omni or the Harmony.
  • Back carry for a toddler: Omni from sitting age, or Harmony after age 1.
  • Larger or smaller wearers: check the listed fit range (Omni petite to 4XL, Harmony XS to XXL).
  • Torn between the two leaders? See Ergobaby Omni Deluxe vs BabyBjörn Harmony.

Frequently asked questions

When can a baby face outward in a carrier?

Ergobaby lists front-out carry from 14 lb and 25 in, up to 30 lb. BabyBjörn suggests facing out from about 5 months. Follow your own carrier's manual and keep the baby's face visible.

All four list a 7 lb minimum. The CPSC urges extra care with babies under 4 months, premature or low-birthweight babies, and babies with colds or breathing problems, and suggests talking to your pediatrician.

Which carrier lasts the longest?

The Ergobaby Omni models are rated to 45 lb and 48 months. The BabyBjörn Harmony goes to 40 lb and 3 years. The BabyBjörn Mini stops at 24 lb or 12 months.
